ANGOLA EMBRACES GLOBAL EFFORTS TO COMBAT FINANCIAL CRIME
United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Session
The Angolan government has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting financial crime at a recent United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice session. Speaking at the 32nd Session of the commission, an Angolan delegation representative emphasized the country’s alignment with international efforts to combat economic, financial, organized, and transnational crime.
Implementation of Measures Against Financial Crimes
Angola has made significant strides in implementing measures to prevent and combat money laundering, terrorism financing, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. A second round of the Mutual Evaluation Process on Compliance with the Angolan System for the Prevention and Suppression of Money Laundering (ML/TF/WMD) is nearing completion.
Asset Repatriation and Development
Angola has successfully repatriated a substantial amount of assets previously misappropriated, which are now being used to promote development and sustainability in the country. A new Public Appropriation Law has been approved, while amendments to the Angolan Code of Criminal Procedure have enhanced the means of achieving criminal justice.
Judicial Reforms
The establishment of local jurisdiction courts and regional appellate courts aims to promote greater expediency and proximity of justice to citizens. The Angolan State recognizes the importance of international cooperation in combating crime and has signed judicial cooperation agreements with various countries.
ANGOLA’S STRATEGY TO COMBAT CORRUPTION
National Strategy for Corruption Prevention and Combating
The Angolan government is committed to implementing a National Strategy for the Prevention and Combating of Corruption, which includes concrete actions to tackle the root causes of corruption. A public consultation process is currently underway, and legislation related to Non-Governmental Organizations is being updated.
HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND VICTIM SUPPORT
Interministerial Commission Against Human Trafficking
The Interministerial Commission Against Human Trafficking has handled 142 cases of human trafficking, with children predominant among the victims. Initiatives for family reunification have been developed since the second half of 2022, and efforts to support victims are ongoing.
LOCAL JURISDICTION COURTS AND REGIONAL APPELLATE COURTS
Guaranteeing Proximity and Expediency of Justice
The establishment of local jurisdiction courts and regional appellate courts aims to promote greater expediency and proximity of justice to citizens. Guarantee judges will ensure a broader respect for individual and collective rights, freedoms, and guarantees.
