Armenia Receives Crucial Support from the Council of Europe to Combat Financial Crime
Yerevan, Armenia - In a bid to strengthen international cooperation in combating financial crime, Armenia has received crucial support from the Council of Europe. The organization recently organized a two-day training program on “Investigation and Prosecution of Terrorism Financing Cases” for 35 investigators, prosecutors, and analysts from various government agencies.
Enhancing Understanding of Terrorism Financing Cases
The training, held in Yerevan on October 17-18, aimed to enhance the understanding of Armenian practitioners on the challenges of investigating and prosecuting terrorism financing (TF) cases. The event covered topics such as:
- Institutional Framework for TF Investigations: Building a strong foundation for combating TF
- Building Expertise in TF Cases: Developing skills and knowledge to tackle complex TF cases
- Joint Investigations: Collaborating with international partners to share expertise and resources
- Recent TF Threats and Typologies: Staying ahead of emerging threats and trends
- Mechanisms for Raising and Moving Financial Resources Directed towards TF: Identifying and disrupting financial flows supporting terrorism
Efficient Institutional Framework for Combating Terrorism Financing
The training also provided a platform for discussing the efficient setup of Armenia’s institutional framework for combating TF, including:
- Inter-Agency Coordination: Effective communication and collaboration between national organizations
- International Cooperation: Strengthening partnerships with international partners to combat terrorism financing
Good Practices and International Standards
The event presented good practices in these areas, highlighting the importance of cooperation between national organizations dedicated to combating TF.
A Larger Initiative to Support Law Enforcement Authorities
The project, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe, aims to enhance Armenia’s national capacities for effective prevention and fight against economic crime. The training is part of a larger initiative to support law enforcement authorities in Armenia and align their internal procedures and expertise with international standards and best practices.
Partnership between the Council of Europe and Armenia
The event marked another step forward in the partnership between the Council of Europe and Armenia, which has been ongoing since 2023 as part of the Partnership for Good Governance III project.
