Belgium Sees Sharp Rise in Online Fraud and Scams: Report
A recent analysis by the Federal Public Service (FPS) Economy has revealed a staggering 8.26% increase in financial fraud cases in Belgium last year, with phishing attacks, unsolicited phone calls, and online sales fraud being the most common types of scams.
Types of Scams on the Rise
- Phishing attacks accounted for approximately one-quarter (23%) of all cases.
- Unsolicited phone calls were responsible for 20% of reported instances.
- Online sales fraud accounted for 15%.
According to FPS Economy spokesperson Etienne Mignolet, scammers are becoming increasingly adept at adapting their tactics to current economic conditions. “The scammers are clearly surfing the news to develop their modus operandi,” he explained.
Examples of Scams
- Fake online stores offering firewood and wood pellets as a way to take advantage of rising energy prices.
- Reports of fake online stores selling toys.
- Numerous complaints about non-delivery of tickets for cultural and sporting events, suggesting that unwitting consumers may have purchased their tickets from fraudulent websites.
Response and Prevention
In response to the rise in online scams, FPS Economy will launch an awareness campaign this summer to help consumers recognize fake online stores. Experts are urging citizens to remain vigilant and take steps to protect themselves from fraudsters.
What You Can Do to Protect Yourself
- Be aware of these tactics and take necessary precautions to safeguard your financial information.
- Verify the authenticity of online stores before making a purchase.
- Never provide personal or financial information in response to unsolicited phone calls or emails.
- Keep your antivirus software up to date and use strong passwords.
