BELIZE FINANCIAL INSTITUTION FRAUD ALERT: BEWARE OF PHISHING SCHEMES AND PROTECT YOURSELF FROM EMAIL SCAMS
The Financial Services Commission (FSC) has issued a warning to Belizean consumers about ongoing phishing schemes targeting individuals under the false authority of the Commission. Scammers are impersonating FSC officials, contacting people and demanding payment fees and personal information in exchange for funds.
Warning Signs: The Email is Not from FSC
Before you click or respond to an email, be aware of these warning signs:
- The email asks you to make a payment over the phone, pay fees different from those listed on the FSC website, or provide credit card or bank details directly by email or phone.
- The email contains terms such as “Bitcoins,” “investigation of your request,” and “attachment or claim XXXXX.”
- If an email contains these phrases, it is likely a phishing attempt and not from the FSC.
Protect Yourself from Email Scams
To avoid falling victim to email scams:
- Keep your anti-virus software up to date and run weekly scans.
- Be wary of emails that don’t address you by name or contain unknown attachments.
- Remove email access from people who no longer need it.
- Use a spam filter on your email account and avoid clicking suspicious links.
- Secure your wireless network and exercise caution when using public networks.
Verify the Authenticity of an Email
Before taking any action, contact the FSC FIRST via email to verify the authenticity of an email or letter. You can also conduct license verification online by visiting the FSC’s website.
Reporting Phishing Attempts
If you suspect a phishing attempt, report it to the FSC using their suspected scam form. The FSC is committed to protecting Belizean consumers and will take action against fraudulent activities. Stay informed and stay safe by staying vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity.
