Bermuda Tightens Sanctions on Global Nations and Groups

Introduction

In a bid to combat global threats, the Bermuda government has introduced new sanctions on numerous countries and organizations. These sanctions aim to curb activities deemed threatening to international peace and security.

Sanctioned Countries

The following countries are now subject to sanctions:

  • Afghanistan
  • Belarus
  • Burundi
  • Central African Republic
  • Democratic People’s Republic of Korea
  • Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Guinea-Bissau
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Lebanon
  • Libya
  • Mali
  • Myanmar
  • Nicaragua
  • Russia
  • Somalia
  • South Sudan
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Venezuela
  • Yemen

Sanctioned Organizations and Groups

Sanctions have also been imposed on the following organizations and groups:

  • Al-Qaeda
  • Da’esh (ISIS)
  • Islamic State
  • Other extremist entities

Effects of Sanctions

The sanctions aim to:

  • Freeze assets of sanctioned individuals and entities
  • Restrict financial transactions with sanctioned countries and organizations
  • Impose travel bans on individuals deemed to be involved in or supporting activities contrary to international law

Government Statement

Bermuda’s Minister of Finance noted that the new sanctions regime is designed to ensure the island’s compliance with international obligations and to support efforts to prevent terrorism, money laundering, and other transnational crimes.
