Title: “Bermuda Seniors Warned of Bank Fraud Scams: Over $100,000 Stolen in Recent Cases”
Bermuda’s Elderly Population Urged to Stay Vigilant Against Banking Scams
The BPS, Bermuda Bankers’ Association, and Ageing and Disability Services have issued a warning to the public, especially seniors, about the increase in reported banking scams involving unsolicited telephone calls, text messages, and emails in Bermuda. In recent weeks, there have been numerous instances of Bermudian residents receiving fraudulent calls from individuals impersonating local bank representatives, informing them of suspected fraudulent activity on their accounts.
$100,000 Fraud Case
A local senior citizen lost over $100,000 after being deceived into making an overseas wire transfer by a fraudster posing as a ‘bank employee’. The scammer, with a foreign accent, misled the victim into thinking there was unusual activity on their account and requested immediate assistance to apprehend the ‘suspect’. The unsuspecting victim was promised that all funds would be reimbursed, but the fraudster had no intention of keeping their word.
Safety Measures to Protect Against Banking Fraud
To protect residents from banking fraud, the Bermuda Police Service, Bermuda Bankers’ Association, and Ageing and Disability Services recommend the following safety measures:
- Do not succumb to pressure: Scammers aim to create a sense of urgency, urging victims to take immediate action.
- Keep personal information secure: Never share sensitive information with someone you don’t know or trust.
- Ensure your devices are secure: Install and update anti-virus software and maintain computer and internet security protections.
- Change passwords regularly: Keep frequently used passwords updated to prevent unauthorized access.
- Beware of installation requests: Be cautious of fraudsters asking you to install software that provides them access to your device.
- Verify website security: Confirm websites are secure by checking for ‘https://’ URLs and padlock icons before submitting sensitive information.
- Do not engage with unsolicited emails or links: Do not respond to requests for personal or bank account information or click on links embedded in unsolicited emails.
- Protect your identity: If your device or account is compromised, immediately contact your financial institution and the police for assistance.
