BERMUDA POLICE URGES PUBLIC TO BE VIGILANT AGAINST IDENTITY THEFT SCAMS

The Bermuda Police Service is cautioning residents to be aware of unsolicited emails from unknown entities that may be attempting to steal their personal information. Two recent scam emails have been reported locally, both claiming that recipients have won significant sums of money and requesting personal details to collect the funds.

Warning Signs

According to Superintendent Sean Field-Lament, these scams often aim to commit identity theft. To avoid falling victim, he advises:

  • Do not respond to these emails
  • Immediately delete them
  • Do not open any attachments or links
  • Block the sender to stop further messages

Red Flags

Field-Lament highlighted several red flags that may indicate a scam email, including:

  • Awards of money or items of value for events not subscribed to
  • Requests for personal information such as banking details
  • Obvious bogus emails with poor formatting

Additional Tips

The superintendent also warned against requests for security measures or protocols to be updated. Legitimate businesses do not operate in this manner.

  • Do not provide any personal information in response to emails from individuals or companies that you do not know
  • If you receive such an email, delete it immediately

By being aware of these scams and taking the necessary precautions, you can protect yourself from falling victim to identity theft. Remember: if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is!
