Financial Crime Investigation in Ghana: Beware of Scams and Frauds

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has issued a public notice warning Ghanaians about various forms of financial crimes, including romance scams, investment fraud schemes, and online safety tips.

Rising Cases of Financial Crimes

In recent times, Ghana has witnessed a surge in cases of financial crimes, with fraudsters using social media platforms and other digital channels to swindle unsuspecting victims. The EOCO has warned that anyone can be a victim of financial crimes, regardless of age, gender, or social status.

Romance Scams

One of the most common types of financial crime is romance scam, where fraudsters contact unsuspecting individuals with promises of love and attention or seek long-term relationships. However, these scammers have ulterior motives and use their victims’ trust to steal their money.

Investment Fraud Schemes

Another type of financial crime is investment fraud schemes, which include Ponzi and pyramid schemes. These scams promise unsuspecting investors high returns on their investments, but in reality, the funds are used to pay off earlier investors.

Illegal Schemes

Ghanaians have also been victims of “money doubling” and “card loading” systems, which are illegal. The Bank of Ghana has issued a public notice warning against these schemes, which promise high returns on investments or offer to load credit cards with large amounts of money.

Online Safety Tips

To avoid falling victim to financial crimes, the EOCO has provided several online safety tips:

  • Keep personal information private
  • Avoid posting pictures of children below 18 years old
  • Be cautious when dealing with strangers online
  • Do not send money to anyone you do not know

Ransomware Protection

Furthermore, the EOCO has warned against the spread of ransomware, a sophisticated piece of malware that blocks access to files and demands payment in exchange for restoration of access. The office has provided 15 easy steps to keep systems protected from ransomware attacks.

Reporting Suspicious Activities

Ghanaians are advised to be vigilant and report any suspicious financial activities to EOCO or other law enforcement agencies. By staying informed and taking precautions, citizens can protect themselves from the scourge of financial crime and maintain their hard-earned money.
