Corporate Compliance Programs Take Center Stage in Bhutan
In 2019-2023, the National Integrity and Anti-Corruption Strategy was launched by the government of Bhutan to strengthen anti-corruption measures. At the heart of this strategy is the Organizational Integrity Plan (OIP), a strategic tool designed to empower agencies to tackle corruption head-on.
The Organizational Integrity Plan (OIP)
The OIP is not just a procedural requirement, but an essential component that must be seamlessly integrated into each agency’s core plans. This approach ensures ownership and emphasizes that integrity and anti-corruption efforts are integral to the organization’s mission.
Periodic Reviews
To ensure effective implementation, the OIP undergoes periodic reviews, assessing its incorporation into key organizational plans and reaffirming its relevance and impact. The annual review evaluates the implementation status of each activity, guided by predetermined criteria and means of verification.
Bhutan Integrity and Business (BIIB) Program
The BIIB program is a comprehensive initiative aimed at promoting sustained ethical business practices in Bhutan. Launched to promote corruption-free business, BIIB seeks to create a level playing field, provide equal opportunities, and address growing private sector distrust.
Collaboration with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)
To enhance collaboration with CSOs in devising anti-corruption approaches and promoting active citizen engagement, the CSO and Media Engagement Programme was developed. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), in partnership with the Department of Local Government (DLG), Royal Institute of Management (RIM), and Bhutan Transparency Initiative (BTI), introduced social accountability tools to promote constructive citizen participation at various stages of development activities and programs.
Praise from Local Stakeholders
The ACC’s efforts have received praise from local stakeholders, who commend the agency’s commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in government. As Bhutan continues to develop its corporate compliance programs, it is clear that the country is moving towards a brighter future free from corruption.
