Financial Crimes Investigation Techniques Boost Security in Somalia

Mogadishu, Somalia - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has strengthened the capacity of the Somali Police Force to combat financial crimes in the country, contributing to improved security.

Enhancing Investigative Capacity through Partnership

In partnership with the Federal Republic of Somalia and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), UNODC implemented a Criminal Investigation Programme (CIP) aimed at enhancing the strategic and operational capacity of criminal investigators to investigate serious crimes, including financial crimes.

Key Components of the CIP

  • Training Investigators: Specialized police investigation trainings for SPF investigators, including courses on money laundering and terrorist financing.
  • Mentors and Programme Liaison Officers: Deployed in various regions of Somalia to support law enforcement efforts.
  • Refurbished Training Facility: The General Kaahiye Academy was refurbished to serve as a training facility for the Somali Police Force.
  • Enhanced Mobility: Vehicles were provided to enhance the mobility of investigators.

Impact on Financial Crimes Investigation

The programme has helped build the capacity of law enforcement institutions to tackle financial crimes effectively. Through the CIP, UNODC has:

  • Aligned the Somali Police Force with International Standards: Ensured that investigations are conducted in accordance with international best practices.
  • Enhanced the Country’s Ability to Prevent and Combat Financial Crimes: Contributed to improved security and development in Somalia.

Commitment to Supporting Law Enforcement

“We are committed to supporting the Somali Police Force to strengthen its investigative capabilities,” said Reginald Pitts, Head of UNODC Somalia office. “This includes training investigators in financial crimes investigation techniques, which is critical to ensuring that financial crimes do not undermine the country’s security and development.”

Future Support for Law Enforcement

UNODC will continue to support the Somali Police Force to enhance its investigative capabilities, contributing to improved security and development in the country.
