Strengthening Law Enforcement in Bosnia and Herzegovina

A new joint initiative between the European Union (EU) and the Council of Europe aims to tackle corruption, money laundering, and terrorist financing in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The “Action against corruption, money laundering and terrorist financing in Bosnia and Herzegovina” seeks to increase trust in the rule of law and democracy in the country.

Key Objectives

The project has several key objectives:

  • Strengthening the legal framework: Implement international standards for anti-corruption and anti-money laundering efforts
  • Improving asset declaration and supervision: Enhance transparency and accountability in public institutions
  • Enforcing provisional measures: Confiscate illicit assets to prevent further economic crimes

Participating Institutions

The project will benefit institutions at both state and entity levels, including:

  • Ministry of Security
  • Ministry of Justice
  • Financial Intelligence Unit
  • Banking sector supervisors
  • Indirect Taxation Authority
  • Ministry of Interior
  • Prosecutor’s Office

Implementation Strategy

The project will work by providing technical assistance to support authorities in implementing international standards and best practices. This will involve:

  • Training: Improve the ability of institutions to prevent and investigate corruption, money laundering, and terrorist financing
  • Capacity-building: Enhance the institutional capacity to address economic crimes
  • Technical expertise: Provide specialized knowledge to support reform efforts

Budget and Funding

A budget of 230,000 Euros has been allocated for the action. The EU funds 85% of the programme, while the Council of Europe contributes 15%.
