Botswana’s Anti-Corruption Agency Conducts Public Opinion Survey
======================================================
Gaborone - The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) has conducted a public opinion survey to gauge the level of corruption in Botswana and assess the public’s confidence in its ability to combat graft.
Purpose of the Survey
The 2017 survey aimed to provide more qualitative information about public perception regarding the level of corruption in Botswana, as well as measure the level of public confidence in the DCEC’s ability to combat corruption. The agency also sought suggestions on how corruption can be reduced in the country.
Methodology
According to the Statistics Act of 2009, individuals within selected households are required by law to provide the requested data.
Assignment Studies
In addition to conducting public opinion surveys, the DCEC also conducts assignment studies, which involve a critical examination of systems and procedures involved in a defined area of activity within an organization. The purpose is to identify existing weaknesses in the system and recommend methods for improvement.
Relationship with Other Authorities
The DCEC has a crucial relationship with other authorities dedicated to fighting corruption in Botswana, including the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). However, their relationship remains problematic, as seen in 2011 when the DPP decided not to prosecute some high-profile corruption cases put forward by the DCEC.
Promoting Anticorruption Culture
To promote an anticorruption culture in all government agencies, the DCEC seconded officers to other ministries to hold corruption prevention committees. These forums aim to spearhead strategies and initiatives in government ministries and mainstream anti-corruption measures.
The agency also collaborates with other oversight bodies, law enforcement agencies, and international organizations such as Interpol to combat corruption.
