Fiji’s Consumer Council Commits to Anti-Bribery Goals, Joins Nationwide Campaign
============================================================
Introduction
The Consumer Council of Fiji (CCoF) has joined a nationwide campaign against bribery, pledging to maintain a bribe-free system and promoting ethical conduct among its staff. The campaign, launched on August 31, 2022, is a joint initiative by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Pacific Regional Anti-Corruption (UN-PRAC) project funded by the New Zealand Government.
CCoF’s Commitment
CCoF Chief Executive Officer Ms Seema Shandil assured that while the Council has its own policies and procedures in place to ensure ethical and transparent conduct, it is honored to be part of the campaign. She emphasized that as consumer champions and advocates, they should strongly advocate against bribery.
Importance of Integrity
Speaking at the launch, Senior Corruption Prevention Officer Mrs Banuve Wainimala reiterated the importance of fighting bribery and corruption, stating that “the only immunity is your integrity.” She added that by knowing how to prevent and fight corruption and opting not to accept bribes, individuals not only avoid tarnishing their reputation but also that of their organization.
Role of CCoF in Fighting Corruption
UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji Anti-Corruption Adviser Dr. Sonja Stefanovska-Trajanoska emphasized the crucial role CCoF plays in fighting corruption and building integrity across the nation. “By promising not to engage in or entertain corrupt practices, and publicly demonstrating this commitment, you are not only strengthening the Council’s reputation but also enhancing its practical ability to make the consumer voice heard and count,” she said.
Conclusion
The anti-bribery campaign is a significant step towards creating a just and fair marketplace for all consumers in Fiji. By joining forces with FICAC, UNDP, and other stakeholders, CCoF has demonstrated its commitment to promoting ethical conduct and fighting corruption.
