A Staggering Reality

A recent survey by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reveals that an astonishing 17% of businesses in Serbia have paid off public officials in the past year. This alarming figure is significantly higher than the regional average of 10.2%.

The Survey’s Findings

The study found that:

  • Around one out of six businesses that had contact with a public official in the past year paid bribes.
  • These companies paid an average of seven bribes to public officials during that period.
  • The prevalence of bribery was highest in the Transportation and Storage sector, where 78.5% of businesses reported direct contact with public officials.
  • In contrast, the Manufacturing, Electricity, Gas, and Water supply sector had the lowest rate of direct interaction at 51.6%.
