Bulgaria’s Cybersecurity Efforts Intensify as Country Seeks to Protect its Growing IT Sector

Sofia, Bulgaria - As Bulgaria continues to attract major global companies to its cities, including Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, and Bourgas, the country is also experiencing a surge in cybercrime. In response, the government has stepped up its cybersecurity efforts, signing a memorandum of understanding with NATO to share information and capabilities on countering cyber threats.

Cybersecurity Challenges

According to reports, around 57% of Bulgarian organizations were subjected to daily or monthly cyberattacks, with attacks against businesses increasing by 20%. The National Strategy for Cybersecurity, “Cyber Resilient Bulgaria 2020”, aims to provide better protection for citizens, businesses, governments, and critical infrastructure.

Cities Lead the Way in R&D and IT Development

Bulgaria’s major cities are hubs for research and development, software development, and service centers for leading global companies. Cities like Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, and Bourgas host numerous R&D centers, centers of excellence, and software development hubs.

  • The country’s rapid development in the latest IT, AI, Big data, and communication technologies has attracted significant investment from foreign companies.
  • However, this growth has also triggered increased interest in cybercrime.

Public Safety and Traffic Safety Projects Underway

Bulgaria is investing heavily in public safety and traffic safety projects. Sofia’s video surveillance system monitors pedestrian areas, major crossings, and traffic safety, with plans to expand the system to sensitive zones.

  • The State Agency for Road Safety aims to reduce accidents and increase public awareness through initiatives such as updating speed cameras and acquiring new laser speed cameras.

Security Companies Thrive in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is home to over 3,200 registered security companies, with many providing centralized security services through monitoring centers and vehicle patrols. The National Association of Trade Security and Security Companies (NAFTSO) represents the majority of these companies.

  • Leading sub-sectors include X-ray scanning equipment, MR equipment, infrared mobile and stationary equipment, IP video surveillance, and access control equipment.
