Expired Certifications Can Disqualify Applicants for Antarctic Expedition Role

The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) has announced new requirements for applicants seeking to join its expedition team. In addition to other essential skills and qualifications, candidates must now possess current certifications in dangerous goods handling and transport.

Key Requirements

  • Dangerous Goods Certifications: Candidates must hold an expired IMDG Dangerous Goods by Sea Full Accept (or evidence of maintained refreshers), and/or IATA Dangerous Goods by Air Acceptance (or evidence of maintained refreshers).
  • Other Requirements:
    • Current “C” class Australian driver’s licence
    • Valid passport with at least six months’ validity beyond planned departure date from Antarctica or sub-Antarctic regions
    • Proof of first aid training

Ideal Candidate Profile

The AAD is seeking candidates with recent hands-on experience in:

  • Warehousing and inventory management
  • Handling and packing goods for transport
  • MS Office Suite proficiency

Desirable skills include:

  • Customs and biosecurity compliance knowledge
  • Temperature-sensitive item handling
  • Cargo management system usage

In addition to these technical requirements, applicants must also demonstrate personal qualities such as:

  • Flexibility
  • Adaptability
  • Ability to work in a challenging environment

Eligibility and Pre-Employment Screening

  • Citizenship: Applicants must be Australian citizens or hold equivalent citizenship status.
  • Pre-Employment Screening: Successful candidates will undergo a pre-employment screening process, including:
    • National Police Check
    • Referee checks
    • Character clearance
    • Medical and psychological assessments
