Employee Code of Conduct
The Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands Employee Code of Conduct outlines the expected standards of behavior and conduct for employees. The code is designed to promote transparency, accountability, and integrity within the organization.
Expected Standards of Behavior
Employees are expected to maintain the highest standards of behavior and conduct at all times. The following principles outline the expected standards:
Confidentiality
- Employees must maintain confidentiality and not disclose sensitive information without authorization.
- This includes protecting confidential information from unauthorized access or disclosure.
Improper or Undue Influence
- Employees must not use their position to influence others improperly or gain an unfair advantage.
- This includes avoiding conflicts of interest, favoritism, and other forms of undue influence.
Use of Shire Resources
- Employees must use Shire resources responsibly, efficiently, and in accordance with policies and procedures.
- This includes using technology, equipment, and facilities for official purposes only.
Use of Shire Finances
- Employees are expected to act responsibly and exercise sound judgment when managing finances.
- This includes complying with relevant regulations and policies, such as procurement and expenditure procedures.
Reporting Suspected Breaches
Employees can report suspected breaches of the code to their supervisor or CEO. The following steps will be taken:
- Reporting: Employees should report suspected breaches in writing, including a clear description of the alleged breach and any supporting evidence.
- Investigation: The Shire will investigate the reported breach in accordance with its policies and procedures.
Consequences of Breaching the Code
The consequences of breaching the code include:
- Reporting suspected unethical, fraudulent, dishonest, illegal or corrupt behavior to the CEO or Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC).
- Dealing with suspected breaches in accordance with Shire policies and procedures.
- Disciplinary action may be taken against employees who breach the code, up to and including termination of employment.
Declaration
Employees are required to sign a declaration that they have received and understand the expected standards of conduct outlined in this code. The declaration is as follows:
“I acknowledge that I have received and understood the Employee Code of Conduct for the Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands. I agree to comply with the principles and expectations outlined in the code, including maintaining confidentiality, avoiding improper or undue influence, using Shire resources responsibly, and reporting suspected breaches.
