AAD Code of Conduct: Setting the Standard for Expeditioners

In one of the most remote and unforgiving regions on Earth, expeditioners with the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) must be prepared to adapt to changing circumstances while upholding the highest standards of behavior.

Code of Conduct Principles

The AAD Code of Conduct is designed to promote a safe, productive, and respectful environment for all expeditioners. The following principles outline the expected behavior and responsibilities:

  • Respect and Conduct: Expeditioners will not engage in extreme behavior, including excessive drinking, disorderly conduct, or any actions that may harm themselves or others.
  • Environmental Stewardship: In one of the most fragile ecosystems on Earth, expeditioners must minimize their impact on the natural environment. This includes adhering to environmental impact assessments, permit requirements, and protecting native fauna and flora.
  • Occupational Health and Safety: Expeditioners are committed to ensuring their own safety, health, and welfare as well as that of others. They will comply with relevant codes of occupational health and safety and take all necessary precautions to prevent accidents.
  • Harassment and Respect: The AAD takes harassment very seriously and expects expeditioners to behave in a respectful manner towards colleagues and other individuals. Harassment can take many forms, including offensive or threatening behavior.
  • Confidentiality and Official Information: Expeditioners are expected to maintain confidentiality when dealing with official information and use it only for official purposes. Any breaches of this code will be taken seriously.

Specific Requirements

In addition to the general principles outlined above, expeditioners must also meet specific requirements:

  • Alcohol and Drug Use: Expeditioners are expected to use alcohol and drugs responsibly, without compromising their wider responsibilities.
  • AAD-Specific Requirements: Expeditioners must meet their responsibilities associated with the Australian Antarctic Program (AAP), including completing training requirements, adhering to expedition responsibilities, and being responsible in their use of financial and physical resources.

Consequences for Breaches

Any breaches of the AAD Code of Conduct may result in:

  • Counseling
  • Suspension or removal of privileges
  • Written reprimands
  • Referral to the expeditioner’s employer
  • Financial accountability for any losses or damages caused

By upholding these standards, expeditioners with the Australian Antarctic Division can ensure a safe, productive, and respectful environment in which to conduct scientific research and exploration in Antarctica.
