Compliance Officer Responsibilities in Papua New Guinea

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in ensuring ships operate in compliance with national and international regulations
  • Identify and report non-compliant ship operators/owners in a timely manner
  • Conduct marine environment pollution incidents assessments, monitoring, and inspections on shipping vessels
  • Maintain constant dialogue with regional partners and national stakeholders on marine environment protection issues
  • Ensure effective and timely implementation of monitoring and compliance activities
  • Provide regular reports to supervisors
  • Respond to emergencies and ensure adherence to NMSA values, code of conduct, occupational health and safety policies, and procedures

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental or Marine Science
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar role
  • Strong knowledge of marine environment and pollution, risk and hazard assessments, chemical properties, oil spill usage and handling, sampling, and statistical analysis
  • Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and analytical skills
  • Ability to mentor and supervise, plan and organize, and innovate

Working Environment

The Monitoring & Compliance Officer will be based at the NMSA Head Office in Port Moresby, with frequent travel to maritime provinces to conduct monitoring and inspections.
