Job Description and Specification
The Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Compliance Officer to join its Operations Division. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that taxpayers comply with tax laws and regulations, while also providing excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce documentary evidence for court cases and testify as an expert witness in criminal prosecutions
- Participate in periodic compliance surveys to identify unregistered taxpayers and persuade them to become compliant
- Investigate applications for relief, exemption, and waivers of property tax and make recommendations
- Prepare warrants of distress for the court’s signature if a taxpayer defaults on a judgement order
- Identify accounts that require specialized knowledge and make referrals for resolution
Job Standards
To perform this job satisfactorily, you will be required to:
- Lodge revenues collected in a timely manner and account for them accurately
- Monitor taxpayers’ accounts and reconcile transactions regularly
- Prepare accurate documentary evidence for court cases within stipulated timelines
- Implement delinquent returns and payment enforcement programs according to guidelines
- Make manageable payment arrangements and monitor them closely
Authority
You will have the authority to:
- Collect taxes, duties, and levies
- Recommend enforcement actions on taxpayers who fail or refuse to comply with tax laws and regulations
- Enforce compliance through legal administrative actions
- Contact taxpayers on delinquent accounts
- Recommend amendments to procedures
Requirements
To be considered for this position, you will need:
- A B.Sc. degree in Business Administration or Accounting or the equivalent qualifications
- Two (2) years of work-related experience
- Excellent knowledge of tax laws, regulations, and guidelines
- Good knowledge of TAJ’s operations and functions
- Working knowledge of financial regulations and guidelines

- Excellent judgment, analytical skills, communication and team building skills, negotiating and persuasive skills, and interpersonal skills
Working Conditions
This role requires:
- High level of risk in dealing with hostile taxpayers
- Irregular working hours at times
