Global Anti-Corruption Efforts in St. Kitts and Nevis: Government Vows to Eliminate Corruption from Public Sector
Commitment to Eradicating Corruption
The Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew-led administration has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating corruption from the public sector with the implementation of its Anti-Corruption/Good Governance program. This pledge was reiterated by Prime Minister Dr. Drew and Attorney General the Honourable Garth Wilkin on multiple occasions, and once again highlighted by Governor General’s Deputy Her Excellency Marcella A. Liburd JP during her delivery of the Throne Speech at the opening of the new Parliamentary Session.
Strengthening Anti-Corruption Efforts
As part of its Anti-Corruption/Good Governance program, the government aims to amend relevant legislation to finally give the Integrity Commission the authority it needs to address corruption by public officials in St. Kitts and Nevis. The government has initiated steps to fully activate the Integrity in Public Life Act and the work of the Integrity Commission.

- Decisive action will be taken to tackle outstanding issues related to integrity in public life
- Enhance the state apparatus for anti-corruption
- Strengthen the Public Accounts Committee
- Improve the public procurement regime
- Address freedom of information issues
Importance of Transparency and Accountability
The government recognizes transparency, accountability, and good governance as critical components of maintaining public trust and confidence. Her Excellency Liburd emphasized that her administration will actively seek opportunities to strengthen bonds of trust with citizens and respond to their needs and aspirations. The government expects citizens to hold them accountable and will also hold others responsible for their actions.
Building a Stronger Democracy
In concluding the Throne Speech, Governor General’s Deputy Her Excellency Liburd stressed the importance of having a solid framework in place to ensure democracy is strengthened and upholds principles of equality, stating that building a better country requires a strong democracy.
