TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO’S FINANCIAL INTELLIGENCE UNIT CRACKS DOWN ON MONEY LAUNDERING AND TERRORISM
The Financial Intelligence Unit of Trinidad and Tobago (FIUTT) has been working diligently to detect and prevent money laundering and the financing of terrorism in the country. As a specialized intelligence-gathering unit within the Ministry of Finance, FIUTT is dedicated to collecting and analyzing financial intelligence and information from various sources.
Primary Function
FIUTT’s primary function is to collect and analyze financial intelligence and information from law enforcement authorities, financial institutions, and listed businesses. This information is used to produce strategic analysis reports that inform policy decision-makers and provide proactive intelligence to law enforcement agencies in the anti-money laundering (AML) and combating the financing of terrorism (CFT) regime.
International Cooperation
FIUTT exchanges financial intelligence and information with members of the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units and foreign FIUs. The unit also monitors developments in money laundering and terrorist financing techniques, typologies, and trends to identify emerging threats and vulnerabilities.
Enforcement and Compliance
FIUTT plays a key role in enforcing AML/CFT compliance among listed businesses and non-regulated financial institutions. This includes conducting on-site examinations, desk-based reviews, outreach and awareness programs, and enforcement action for breaches of AML/CFT obligations.
International Recognition
The FIUTT’s efforts have been recognized internationally, with the unit being admitted as a member of the Egmont Group in 2013. This membership provides FIUTT with access to a global network of financial intelligence units and enables it to share information and best practices with its international counterparts.
