Corruption and Organized Crime Plague The Gambia
Widespread Corruption and Criminal Activity Exposed in New Report
A recent report from a leading international organization has revealed the alarming extent to which corruption and organized crime are entrenched in The Gambia. The report highlights numerous examples of illegal activities, including:
- Illicit Rosewood Trading: Illegally harvested rosewood is being traded on the black market, with foreign nationals involved in the trade.
- Illegal Fish Export: Foreign-owned fish processing plants along the Senegal border are exporting fish intended for human consumption, with some fishmeal and fish oil being sent to Vietnam and re-labelled on the black market.
Corruption Permeates All Levels of Government and Society
The report notes that corruption is not limited to specific individuals or institutions, but rather is a pervasive problem that affects all levels of government and society. According to the organization’s director:
“From top officials to low-ranking officers, corruption is a pervasive problem in The Gambia. It undermines trust in institutions, fuels criminal activity, and hinders economic development.”
Lack of Progress in Combating Money Laundering and Financial Crime
Despite efforts by the government to establish a Financial Intelligence Unit, the report highlights a lack of progress in combating money laundering and financial crime.
Civil Society and Social Protection Efforts
However, there is a glimmer of hope. The report notes that civil society organizations are playing an increasingly important role in challenging restrictive laws and securing favorable judgments. Additionally:
- Shelter for Vulnerable Individuals: A short-term shelter has been established to provide protection for vulnerable individuals affected by organized crime.
- Center for Victims of Human Rights Violations: A center has been set up to support victims of human rights violations.
Calls for Action
The report concludes that much more needs to be done to address the root causes of corruption and organized crime in The Gambia. According to the organization’s director:
“The government must take decisive action to tackle corruption and strengthen institutions. The people of The Gambia deserve better than a country plagued by corruption and criminal activity.”
