Cryptocurrency Fraud: A Scoping Review
Introduction
This scoping review aims to identify and categorize various types of cryptocurrency fraud discussed in academic literature and grey literature. The study’s methodology involves searching both academic databases and grey literature sources to provide a comprehensive overview of the different types of cryptocurrency fraud.
Methodology
The authors used a systematic approach to search for relevant studies, involving:
- Academic databases: Google Scholar was searched using keywords related to cryptocurrency fraud.
- Grey literature sources: Company reports and other non-academic sources were also searched.
- PRISMA-ScR flow diagram: The study’s search process is illustrated using this flow diagram, which involves screening titles, abstracts, and full-text articles.
Results
A total of 63 studies from academic literature and 53 studies from grey literature met the inclusion criteria for this scoping review. The authors identified:
- 29 different types of cryptocurrency fraud in academic literature
- 32 different types of cryptocurrency fraud in grey literature
Limitations
The study highlights a lack of conceptual clarity in the definition of various types of cryptocurrency fraud, with only about half of the included studies providing clear definitions of all the fraud types discussed. This limitation is noted as a challenge to understanding how these frauds are committed and how they might be addressed.
Conclusion
This research aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the different types of cryptocurrency fraud, which can help inform strategies for preventing and mitigating these crimes. The study’s findings will contribute to a better understanding of the complexities surrounding cryptocurrency fraud and will aid in developing effective prevention and mitigation measures.
