Cybercrime Bill Introduced in Montserrat to Combat Growing Threats

The Government of Montserrat has taken a significant step towards combating cybercrime by introducing legislation aimed at protecting citizens from online-related offenses. The Ministry of Communication, Works, Labour and Energy is seeking public input on the draft Penal Code (Amendment) Bill.

Key Provisions of the Bill

  • Insert various cybercrime offenses into the penal code
    • Identity theft
    • Computer-related forgery
    • Violation of privacy
    • Child pornography
    • Harassment
    • Other offenses that utilize electronic or online communication

The amendment is designed to protect citizens and residents from the growing threat of ICT crimes.

Public Input Encouraged

The public is being encouraged to view the suggested amendments and provide feedback on the recommendations. To facilitate this process, the Ministry has:

  • Published the draft bill on its website and social media platforms
    • Facebook pages

A townhall discussion has also been organized to foster interaction and encourage greater public input on the cybercrime offenses.

Submission of Feedback

Feedback on the amendments must be submitted via email to mcw@gov.ms and must be received by November 9, 2020. The Ministry is urging the public to take advantage of this opportunity to have their voices heard and contribute to the development of a stronger legal framework to combat cybercrime in Montserrat.
