Cybercrime Rises in Spain, Authorities Take Action
Madrid, Spain
The Spanish government has released a policy brief highlighting the growing threat of cybercrime in the country. According to the report, cyber incidents against critical infrastructure have increased significantly over the past few years.
Growing Threat of Cybercrime
In 2021, there were 69,544 recorded victimizations by type of crime and victims’ age, with computer fraud being the most common form of cybercrime, accounting for 55% of all recorded victimizations. The report also highlights the increasing use of phishing tactics, malware, and other forms of cyber attacks to obtain sensitive information.
Authorities Take Action
To combat these threats, the authorities have launched several high-profile operations in 2021. One such operation, “SECRETO”, resulted in the dismantling of a large-scale fraud network that had defrauded over €12 million. Another operation, “RECOLECTOR”, led to the arrest and investigation of eleven people suspected of computer fraud.
International Cooperation Crucial
The report emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in fighting cybercrime, with Europol and other law enforcement agencies playing a key role in several operations. “Cybercrime is a growing threat that requires a coordinated response from authorities,” said a spokesperson for the Spanish government. “We are committed to protecting our citizens and businesses from these threats and will continue to work closely with international partners to combat cybercrime.”
