Counterfeit Currency on the Rise: Laois-Offaly Gardai Warn of Growing Threat

Laois-Offaly Gardai are sounding the alarm about a recent surge in counterfeit currency being used in the region. The Garda spokesperson urges the public to remain vigilant and take steps to protect themselves from falling victim to these fake notes.

Detecting Counterfeit Currency: Tips from Laois-Offaly Gardai

To help combat this issue, Laois-Offaly Gardai have provided tips on how to detect counterfeit currency:

  • Feel the texture: Genuine notes have raised intaglio printing, which can be felt when touched. Higher-denomination banknotes also feature tactile marks.
  • Examine in bright light: The denomination should be clearly visible and perfectly formed. For high-value notes (€50 or €100), look for colour-shifting ink that changes from purple to olive green or brown when tilted.
  • Check for security features: Lower-denomination notes have an iridescent stripe that shines against bright light. High-value notes feature a security thread embedded in the note, which includes a watermark and value numeral.
