TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS FOR COMPLIANCE IN SOLOMON ISLANDS

Digital Transformation in Solomon Islands: A New Era for Government Administration

Honiara, Solomon Islands - The Solomon Islands Government has embarked on a digital transformation journey with the support of Australia, aiming to enhance efficiency and transparency in government administration.

Upgrades to ICT Systems

The Australian High Commission Counsellor Kevin Playford recently launched several new ICT projects aimed at modernizing major Solomon Islands Government Information and Communications Technology (ICT) systems. The upgrades build on Australia’s infrastructure investment in the Coral Sea Cable System, which provides high-speed fibre optic internet connectivity to the country.

Priorities for Digital Transformation

“We value the continued support of our stakeholders as we continue to grow the skills of our workforce and contribute to Solomon Islands’ economic growth,” said Permanent Secretary McKinnie Dentana at the launch. “E-commerce and e-governance are priority areas for us.”

The recent upgrades include timely updates to both software and hardware, ensuring government services are available to citizens in a convenient, safe, and transparent manner.

Enhancing Cybersecurity

In a world where technology plays an increasingly vital role in daily life, prioritizing cybersecurity is essential for preserving data privacy and protecting sensitive information. To this end, recent upgrades to the Windows Server operating platform and licenses now align with Microsoft support and security recommendations.

Protecting Government Networks and Devices

The networks and devices used by the government are also protected from attempts to damage or destroy their function.

Strengthening Physical Security

The installation of security cameras and access controls, as well as the procurement of storage hardware from Australia for the Solomon Islands data center, has bolstered the physical security of the new ICT premises built with Australian support in 2019.

Challenges and Opportunities during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Since March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has presented challenges to the ICT landscape in Solomon Islands and worldwide. However, it has also created opportunities, including fast-tracking enhancements to connectivity through reliable access to external technical assistance and training through virtual meetings.

Australia’s Continued Support for Solomon Islands’ ICT Development

Australia’s investment in the upgrade of Citrix, a platform that enables users to access government ICT servers virtually, is part of a package of eight ICT support projects totaling approximately SBD $8.9 million.

“These advancements are crucial for our country as we move forward with our ICT strategy,” said Counsellor Playford. “ICT plays such a critical role in service delivery for governments, and it’s essential that we stay on the front foot of emerging changes to both technology and its supporting infrastructure.”

Long-term Partnership

Australia has been supporting Solomon Islands Government ICT Services since 2003 and is committed to continuing its partnership with the country to harness the life-changing power of technology and improve its delivery of services.
