International Cooperation in Combating Financial Crime in Ecuador Takes Center Stage

Global Financial Integrity Signs Cooperation Agreement with Ecuador’s Financial Intelligence Unit

Washington D.C. - In a significant step towards combating financial crime and corruption, Global Financial Integrity (GFI) has signed a cooperation agreement with the Unidad de Análisis Financiero y Económico (UAFE), Ecuador’s Financial Intelligence Unit.

Strengthening Efforts to Prevent Money Laundering and Financing of Crimes

The two-year agreement aims to enhance Ecuador’s capabilities in preventing and eradicating money laundering and financing of crimes, particularly those related to environmental and natural resources. The UAFE is responsible for:

  • Collecting information
  • Making reports
  • Executing national policies and strategies to combat these issues

GFI President & CEO Tom Cardamone expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating that “money laundering and natural resource crimes are ubiquitous, but each country has its own unique experience with them.” He looks forward to bringing GFI’s expertise to the task and learning from the Ecuadorian team.

Promoting Financial Transparency and Economic and Human Rights

The agreement establishes mechanisms for providing technical assistance and training to combat corruption, opacity, organized crime, money laundering, and terrorism financing. It also aims to promote financial transparency and economic and human rights through knowledge transfer and exchange of best practices.
