Eight Suspects Arrested in Malta: A Multi-Million Euro Customs Fraud Scheme

In a significant operation, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) in Malta arrested eight suspects, including five public officials, on 17 July 2023, in Valletta. This investigation centers on customs fraud and corruption.

Alleged Scheme Details and Arrested Suspects

The alleged scheme involves the evasion of customs taxes and duties on the importation of clothing and other goods from China:

  • Suspects under investigation for orchestrating the fraud: Three suspects representing two companies.
  • Public officials involved: Five public officials, including customs officials, accused of accepting bribes to overlook their duties.

Searches and Seizures

Maltese authorities, in collaboration with the Malta Police Force’s Financial Crimes Investigations Department, carried out searches at the following locations:

  • Customs offices
  • Residences of the suspects
  • Registered addresses of the companies under investigation

Significant Findings

During the search, the following were seized:

  • Three luxury vehicles
  • Approximately €180,000 in cash

Additionally, measures were taken to secure all funds and immovable property belonging to the suspects.

Offenses Targeted and Potential Damage

This investigation targets the following offenses:

  • Customs fraud
  • Corruption of public officials
  • Money laundering

Preliminary assessments suggest that the potential damage to the EU budget could amount to millions of euros.
