Elder Abuse Awareness Day: A Call to Action in the USVI

As World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed on June 15, AARP in The Virgin Islands is sounding the alarm about the growing problem of elder abuse in the territory.

The Problem of Elder Abuse in the USVI

According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, at least one in 10 community-dwelling older adults experience some form of abuse each year. In the Virgin Islands, this can take many forms - physical, emotional and psychological, financial, sexual, and neglect.

Warning Signs of Elder Abuse

  • Sudden depression
  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Confusion
  • Anxiety and anger
  • Fear to speak to others
  • Secretive behavior
  • A sudden change in spending habits
  • Transferring of assets or changes to financial documents
  • Unpaid bills
  • Loss of money or possessions
  • Friends or family members claiming they are helping manage finances

Reporting Elder Abuse

If you suspect elder abuse, report it. The Adult Protective Services (APS) office at the Department of Human Services can be contacted confidentially:

  • On St. Thomas: 340-774-0930 ext. 4239
  • On St. Croix: 340-642-8820

Advocating for Stronger Laws

AARP in The Virgin Islands has been advocating for stronger laws to protect seniors from abuse and exploitation. In 2020, Governor Albert Bryan Jr. signed Act No. 8318, which amended the Elder Dependent Adult Abuse Prevention Act. However, more work is needed to ensure that older adults living in the Virgin Islands are safe.

Policymakers Must Take Action

“Policymakers must implement more severe ramifications for these acts, especially when committed for financial gain,” said Noemi Garcia, Associate State Director Communications/Community Outreach for AARP in The Virgin Islands. “AARP-VI continues to work and advocate for older adults in the Virgin Islands to develop a more comprehensive anti-elder abuse legislation.”
