EU-Ghana Anti-Corruption Programme Launched
Strengthening Capacity Against Corruption in Ghana
The European Union (EU) has launched a five-year anti-corruption programme in Ghana with the goal of supporting the country’s National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP). The EUR 20 million programme aims to strengthen the capacity of civic education providers, law enforcement agencies, and institutions to combat corruption.
Programme Objectives
- Build the capacity of civic education providers to conduct campaigns and advocate for increased accountability.
- Strengthen law enforcement agencies by building the capacity of prosecutors and judges to hear and decide corruption cases.
- Support the implementation of NACAP, promote good governance, and improve accountability in Ghana.
Programme Launch
The programme was launched on June 14, 2016, in Accra by EU Ambassador William Hanna. He emphasized the need for full ownership and commitment from the government and citizens to succeed. The launch was attended by representatives of EU Member States, development partners, government officials, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and beneficiary institutions working to curb corruption in the country.
Key Stakeholders
- Government: The programme aims to support the implementation of NACAP, promote good governance, and improve accountability in Ghana.
- Civic Education Providers: The National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) and CSOs will benefit from capacity-building to conduct campaigns and advocate for increased accountability.
- Law Enforcement Agencies: Prosecutors and judges will receive training to effectively hear and decide corruption cases.
Challenges Ahead
While the programme has the potential to make a significant contribution to the fight against corruption in Ghana, its success depends on the commitment of all stakeholders, including the government and citizens. Ambassador Hanna appealed to the government to reaffirm its commitment to providing resources and leadership to help institutions deliver in the fight against corruption.
Programme Impact
The EU-Ghana anti-corruption programme is expected to:
- Support the implementation of NACAP and promote good governance.
- Improve accountability in Ghana by building the capacity of civic education providers, law enforcement agencies, and institutions.
- Contribute significantly to the fight against corruption in Ghana.
By working together, the EU, the government of Ghana, and other stakeholders can make a meaningful impact on reducing corruption in the country.
