Belarus Grapples with Financial Crime Examples: EU-CoE Partnership Seeks to Strengthen Measures Against Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing

The European Union (EU) and Council of Europe (CoE) have launched a new project aimed at countering economic crime in Belarus. The initiative focuses on strengthening measures to respond to money laundering and terrorist financing threats, as part of the second phase of the EU-CoE Partnership for Good Governance programme.

Enhancing Compliance with International Standards

The project prioritizes enhancing compliance with international standards and good practices in the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Combating Financing of Terrorism (CFT) institutional framework. The goal is to strengthen institutions involved in fighting money laundering and terrorist financing by developing operational capacities and promoting the adoption of best practices.

EU-CoE Partnership for Good Governance Programme

The EU-CoE Partnership for Good Governance programme has identified six projects as part of its second phase, with this initiative being one of them. The project contributes to the EU’s 2020 targets in priority area “Strengthening the rule of law and anti-corruption mechanisms” and is aligned with the CoE’s cooperation priorities for Belarus.
