In a recent resolution adopted by the EU Parliament, lawmakers emphasized the need for long-term political, diplomatic, financial, and technical support from the EU to help Kyrgyzstan develop its democratic institutions.
Concerns Over Recent Constitutional Amendments
The parliament expressed concern over recent constitutional amendments that have reinforced the prime minister’s powers and undermined the independence of the judiciary. The resolution calls on Kyrgyzstan to promote values such as freedom of expression, association, and assembly, and to ensure the independence of the judiciary.

Concerns Over Azimjon Askarov’s Life Sentence

The European Union has instructed its President to forward this recommendation to the Council, Commission, and Vice President of the Commission/High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, as well as to the President, Government, and Parliament of Kyrgyzstan.
