Efforts to Combat Corruption in The Gambia Gain Momentum

A Decade of Corruption

The Gambia has struggled to overcome a decade of corruption under the regime of former President Yahya Jammeh. His administration weakened state institutions, perpetuating corrupt practices that damaged the national economy.

Coalition’s Initiatives

The Anti-Corruption Coalition (ACCG) has partnered with the Partnership for Transparency (PTF) and received funding from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). The coalition’s efforts are aimed at raising awareness about corruption and promoting transparency in governance.

Two-Pronged Approach

  • Establishing Anti-Corruption Champion Groups: At the grassroots level, the ACCG aims to raise awareness among communities about civic and political rights. This includes developing information, education, and communication (IEC) tools and training local champions.
  • Strengthening Capacity of Local Anti-Corruption Champions: The coalition will provide knowledge and learning materials on project approach, lessons learned, and impacts in the form of public reports, statements, and press releases.

Key Activities

  • Establishing a Pro-Accountability Network comprising of CBOs, CSOs, journalists, women, and youth groups
  • Conducting consultative meetings to strategize a coordinated working plan for anti-corruption efforts in The Gambia
  • Producing knowledge and learning materials on the project approach, lessons learned, and impacts
  • Holding three knowledge-sharing events at the University of The Gambia and in each of the two identified LGAs

Expected Outcomes

The project is expected to contribute to making The Gambian economy more transparent. This will improve the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provide adequate resources to address pressing social and economic needs such as poverty, inequality, and injustice.

Project Evaluation

The project will incorporate routine monitoring and supervision, and a formal project evaluation conducted by a professional private evaluator six months after project completion. This will ensure that the project’s impact is assessed accurately and that lessons learned are documented for future reference.
