Solomon Islands Strengthens Anti-Corruption Efforts with Regional Cooperation

The Solomon Islands Financial Intelligence Unit (SIFIU) has embarked on a two-week peer-to-peer learning program in Papua New Guinea to enhance its capabilities in combating corruption and money laundering. The initiative, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), brings together experts from both countries to share knowledge and best practices.
Strengthening Financial Intelligence Units
Four senior staff members of SIFIU will participate in the intensive program, focusing on financial analysis and supervision. Through hands-on activities, they aim to upgrade their skills and enhance their unit’s capacities to combat money laundering, a crucial tool in the fight against corruption.

The country has adopted the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) and is committed to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’s Goal 16 targets, focusing on reducing corruption and combating organized crime.

UNDP Deputy Resident Representative/Country Manager Berdi Berdiyev highlighted the importance of Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) in the fight against corruption, emphasizing that anti-money laundering and anti-corruption efforts are mutually reinforcing. The program aims to foster strategic discussions around improved regional cooperation and potential development of joint intelligence products.
- The FIU attachment program is supported by the Governments of Japan, Solomon Islands, and the United Kingdom through the Pacific Anti-Corruption Project and Transparency and Accountability for the People of Solomon Islands - the Project for Strengthening Capacities to Combat Corruption (TAPSCCC), both implemented by UNDP.
