Iraqi Judicial System Scores Success in Financial Crime Fighting Efforts

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has made significant strides in strengthening Iraq’s financial crime investigation and prosecution capabilities, training over 2,000 officials since 2021. This initiative aims to combat complex and organized financial crimes, including corruption, illicit enrichment, and money laundering.

Strengthening Judicial Capacities

More than 700 Iraqi judges have benefited from interactive workshops led by UNDP experts. These workshops covered practical case examples and promoted collaborative approaches among judges and prosecutors. The training sessions have fostered a community of practice, supporting the judiciary’s role in combating corruption and anti-money laundering.

Impact and Testimonials

The impact of these workshops has been far-reaching, with participants reporting positive results and sharing personal testimonials across Iraq. UNDP’s Financial Investigation workshops and training sessions are instrumental in shaping the future of financial crime enforcement in Iraq, providing judges, prosecutors, and law enforcement officers with the necessary tools and knowledge to conduct thorough financial investigations.

Launch of Handbook for Enhancing Financial Investigations

Another notable achievement is the Handbook for Enhancing Financial Investigations and Upholding the Rule of Law, launched in November 2023. The handbook was co-created by 11 institutions collaborating on financial crimes cases, demonstrating the strong partnership between UNDP and Iraqi agencies.

Partnership and Support

The success of the project is a testament to the unity and determination of the Iraqi judicial system, with collaboration from key institutions including:

  • Supreme Judicial Council
  • Federal Ministry of Interior
  • Central Bank of Iraq’s AML-CFT Office
  • Others

The project has also received invaluable support from the US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement.

Future Impact

As UNDP continues to build robust justice and law enforcement in Iraq, the impact of these efforts is expected to be felt across the country, promoting financial inclusion and combating crime.
