Financial Services Accessibility in Poland: Regional Analysis

A recent study has shed light on the accessibility of financial services across Poland’s voivodeships. The research, conducted by a team of experts, used a unique methodology to assess the availability of banking services in each region.

Regional Variations

According to the findings, the highest values for accessibility to financial services were recorded in:

  • Mazowieckie voivodeship, with Warsaw being the hub of activity
  • Katowice, Gliwice, Bielsko-Biala, and Czestochowa in Slaskie voivodeship
  • Krakow and adjacent areas in Malopolskie voivodeship

On the other hand, several regions struggled to access financial services, including:

  • Lubuskie voivodeship, which had one of the lowest scores in Poland
  • Opolskie voivodeship, particularly near the border with Slaskie and the Czech Republic

Disparities Within Regions

The study also highlighted disparities within individual regions. For example:

  • While Gdansk, Gdynia, and Sopot in Pomorskie voivodeship had high concentrations of financial services, other areas in the region struggled to access these services.

Methodology and Findings

To better understand the challenges faced by residents in accessing financial services, researchers applied the nearest neighbor methodology to identify the furthest point in each voivodeship from which it is possible to access banking services. The results showed that a 3.3 km distance is needed to access financial services from the furthest point in each voivodeship.

Implications for Policymakers and Financial Institutions

The study’s findings have important implications for policymakers and financial institutions seeking to improve accessibility to financial services across Poland. By understanding the regional disparities in financial services, authorities can develop targeted initiatives to address these issues and ensure that all citizens have equal access to banking services.
