Finland Cracks Down on Financial Crime with New Prevention Strategies

A Comprehensive Approach to Community Safety

In a bid to tackle financial crime and improve community safety, the Finnish Government has launched a comprehensive national crime prevention programme. The “Working Together for Safer and More Secure Communities” initiative, adopted in 2016, brings together various stakeholders from public authorities, businesses, non-governmental organisations, and residents to prevent crime and enhance security.

Programme Objectives

  • Promote resident participation in crime prevention measures
  • Improve opportunities for citizens to influence and participate in preventing crime
  • Increase a sense of safety and security within communities

Key Measures

  1. Clarify the role of crime prevention in municipal planning: Ensuring that crime prevention is integrated into local planning processes.
  2. Foster cooperation among public authorities, businesses, and residents: Encouraging collaboration to prevent crime and enhance community safety.
  3. Increase expertise in crime prevention at both the local and national levels: Providing training and resources for those working on crime prevention initiatives.

Programme Implementation

The programme will run until 2020 and includes a range of measures designed to improve local crime prevention efforts.
