Belgian Banking Fraud Statistics Reveal Alarming Rise in Scams and Phishing Attacks
Fraud Cases Reach All-Time High in Belgium
According to a recent analysis by the Federal Public Service (FPS) Economy, cases of financial fraud and phishing attacks have seen an unprecedented surge in Belgium last year. The study reveals that a total of 51,874 instances of fraud were reported in 2022, marking an 8.26% increase compared to the previous year.
Phishing Attacks Dominate Scam Landscape
- Phishing attacks accounted for roughly one-quarter (23%) of all cases of fraud
- Unsolicited phone calls responsible for 20% of all scams
- Online sales fraud making up 15% of all scams respectively
The scammers are becoming increasingly proficient at adapting their scams to current economic conditions, according to FPS Economy spokesperson Etienne Mignolet. “The scammers are clearly surfing the news to develop their modus operandi,” he explained.
Scams Targeting Current Economic Conditions
- Fake online stores offering firewood and wood pellets, taking advantage of the sharp rise in energy prices
- Reports of fake online stores appearing to sell toys
- Numerous reports of non-delivery of tickets for cultural and sporting events, suggesting that unwitting consumers may have purchased their tickets on fake online platforms
FPS Economy Launches Awareness Campaign
In response to the alarming rise in online scams, FPS Economy will launch an awareness campaign this summer to help consumers recognize fake online stores. The campaign aims to educate consumers on how to identify and avoid falling prey to these types of scams.
