Gaza’s Humanitarian Crisis Deepens as UN Warns of Critical Shortages

Gaza City Under Siege

The United Nations has sounded the alarm over Gaza’s dire humanitarian situation, highlighting critical shortages of fuel, food, water, and medical supplies. Despite a modest increase in aid deliveries, the UN warns that needs are far greater than what is being met.

Critical Shortages

According to UN estimates, the daily average volume of commodities entering Gaza prior to the recent hostilities was approximately 100,000 metric tons. However, only about 4% of this amount has been delivered since then, with most crucially lacking fuel essential for powering vital services such as:

  • Hospitals
  • Water desalination plants
  • Bakeries

Consequences of Fuel Shortages

  • Without fuel, our humanitarian operation will stop.
  • No fuel means no functioning hospitals, no desalination of water, and no baking. Many people are drinking saline groundwater, increasing the risks of:
    • Diarrhea
    • Cholera
    • Other health issues.

UN Urges Action

The UN is urging Israel to:

  • Restore water and electricity supplies to pre-conflict levels
  • Work with humanitarian teams to find a secure way to deliver fuel into Gaza

The organization has 400,000 liters of trucks ready to go, which would provide fuel for approximately two and a half more days.

Scaled-Up Deliveries Needed

For Gazans to access adequate food, water, medical care, and other essential supplies, the UN emphasizes that deliveries must be scaled up and fuel supplies replenished. Additionally, it will be important that the Israeli crossings for the movement of people and goods are opened.

Palestinian Foreign Minister’s Plea

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad al-Maliki urged the international community to take immediate action to stop the killing and massacres being committed against his people. He stressed that over 2 million Palestinians are on a survival mission every day and night, with:

  • 150 Palestinians killed, including 60 children
  • Many more injured and displaced

International Law and Peace

Al-Maliki emphasized that only international law and peace are worthy of unconditional support. He warned that the fate of the Palestinian people cannot continue to be dispossession, displacement, denial of rights, and death.

Israel’s Response

Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen responded, saying that young babies and children are held hostage in Gaza, victims of evil. He condemned Saturday’s massacre, when over 1,500 terrorists infiltrated Israel and killed over 1,400 men, women, and children, wounding more than 4,000.

Time is Running Out

As the world watches Gaza’s crisis unfold, UN officials warn that time is running out. “All eyes are fixed on Gaza, do not fail the test,” urged al-Maliki.
