Tunisia’s Constitutional Reforms Hinge on Economic Governance, Says IDLO
The International Development Law Organization (IDLO) is working to strengthen democratic transition in Tunisia by enhancing the capacity of magistrates and prosecutors to combat financial and economic crime.
Good Economic Governance Crucial for Success
According to IDLO, good economic governance is essential for the success of Tunisia’s constitutional reforms. The organization claims that effective governance is necessary to prevent corruption and financial mismanagement, which have long been major concerns in the country.
Capacity-Building Efforts
To achieve this goal, IDLO has been assisting examining magistrates and public prosecutors with investigation techniques and procedures, as well as drafting curricula for investigation and adjudication. The organization is also exploring mechanisms to involve Tunisian civil society organizations in the fight against financial crime and protect whistleblowers.
Creation of Pôle Judiciaire Financier
The creation of the Pôle Judiciaire Financier, a first-instance court dedicated to investigating all cases falling under financial and economic crime, by the Tunisian Government in September 2012 has been hailed as a significant step towards tackling this issue. However, IDLO believes that further capacity-building efforts are necessary to ensure effective prosecution of these crimes.
Critical Time for Tunisia
The organization’s efforts come at a critical time for Tunisia, where corruption and financial mismanagement have long been major concerns. As the country continues its democratic transition, it is essential that it establishes strong institutions and practices to prevent and combat financial crime.
Widespread Support from Local Stakeholders
IDLO’s initiative has received widespread support from local stakeholders, who recognize the importance of addressing financial and economic crime in order to ensure a stable and prosperous future for Tunisia.
