Government Officer Position - Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands

Job Summary

The Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands invites applications for a Government Officer position. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the operations of the government, including administration, post office services, and fisheries management.

Responsibilities

  • Fisheries Administration
    • Administer day-to-day operations of fisheries in SGSSI
    • Process daily catch data and issue reports to Director of Fisheries and Environment (DOFE)
    • Conduct at-sea inspections of licensed fishing fleet
    • Maintain database with required information relating to fisheries, transhipment, and fees and charges
  • Post Office Services
    • Provide post office services for personnel on base
  • Stock Checks and Merchandise Management
    • Carry out stock checks of merchandise at shops on South Georgia

Person Specification

  • A responsible and self-motivated individual with the ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
  • Strong leadership skills, customer-facing experience, flexible, and adaptable.
  • Confident communicator with good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Numerate and competent in use of standard IT packages.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and timely records.

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of South Georgia’s environmental protection activities (visitor management, fisheries management, biosecurity, wildlife and environmental protection, conservation of heritage assets).

Terms of Employment

  • Salary: £34,200 plus all accommodation and subsistence included when deployed.
  • Contract: 38 months starting in September or December 2024.
  • Location: South Georgia.
  • Travel: Travel between UK and South Georgia is included.
