Compliance Regulations in Guinea Remain Lax, Despite International Standards

Guinea’s product and service quality standards have been criticized for their lack of enforcement and application, leaving consumers vulnerable to subpar goods and services. Investigations are occasionally launched at the request of law enforcement agencies to address suspected cases of poisoning, but importers often find themselves having to apply international standards to Guinea’s products.

Challenges in Compliance

The Guinean Institute for Standardization and Meteorology is responsible for drafting and adapting local standards to meet international requirements. However, compliance with these regulations remains a major issue in the country.

  • The customs agency requires a certificate of origin for certain products to enter the country, including:
    • Mineral products
    • Animal byproducts
    • Live animals
    • Hunting and fishing products
    • Maritime fishing products
    • Scrap/waste materials

According to Article 26 of Guinea’s Customs Code of 2015, importers must provide additional documentation before their goods can clear customs.
