Sanctions Compliance Guidelines in Guinea Issued to Encourage Accountability for Violent Repression
The Guinea (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 came into full force on December 31, 2020, aimed at ensuring the effective operation of financial and immigration sanctions related to Guinea. These regulations were introduced to encourage the government of Guinea to investigate properly the violent repression that occurred on September 28, 2009, and its aftermath, as well as hold accountable and bring criminal proceedings against those responsible.
Replacing Existing Legislation
The regime has replaced relevant existing EU legislation and UK regulations with substantially the same effect, designating individuals who are included on the UK sanctions list. This is a crucial step in promoting accountability for human rights abuses and violence in Guinea.
