Go Haiti Factory Sets New Standard for Compliance with Only 3% Non-Compliance Rate
Port au Prince, December 10, 2016
The annual Better Work labor compliance assessment has revealed that Go Haiti S.A., a Haitian garment factory, has achieved an unprecedented non-compliance rate of only 3%. This remarkable achievement sets a new standard for compliance among all assessed garment factories in Haiti.
Commitment to Compliance
Go Haiti’s commitment to respecting legal requirements and creating a safe and compliant working environment is the key to their success. “We believe that it is not an option for us but our highest priority,” said Mathias Beris, Plant Manager at Go Haiti.
Strong Systems in Place
The factory has set up strong systems to avoid non-compliance, particularly in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). Joceline Garraud, Compliance Manager at Go Haiti, explained:
- We have an OSH committee that includes workers and meets monthly.
- We conduct internal OSH inspections weekly.
Training and Continuous Learning
Go Haiti places a strong emphasis on regular training for both workers and management staff. This includes:
- New hires undergo induction training.
- Twice a year, the entire workforce and all management staff participate in joint training sessions to review company policies and procedures.
Garraud stressed the importance of continuous learning at Go Haiti: “We believe in learning and improving through regular follow-up, meetings, internal inspections, and verifications, and involving all members of the company in the process.”
Results
The factory’s commitment to compliance has paid off:
- 100% of workers earn at least 350 Gourdes per day, higher than the minimum wage for this sector.
- The company is now working on remedying non-compliance issues identified during the last Better Work assessment and aims to become the first factory in Haiti to achieve a 100% compliance rating from Better Work.
Go Haiti’s achievement serves as an inspiration to other factories in Haiti, demonstrating that a commitment to compliance can lead to positive outcomes for workers and the company.
