Horizon Europe Funds Research to Combat Identity Theft in Cyprus and EU

Europe’s research and innovation program, Horizon Europe, is allocating €6 million from its €95.5 billion budget (2021-2027) to combat the threat of identity theft, specifically online deepfakes.

Call for Proposals to Counteract Identity Theft

Horizon Europe has launched a call for proposals to develop innovative technological solutions and address the societal and ethical considerations surrounding online identity theft. The objective is to counteract identity theft and ensure efficient law enforcement with valid evidence in court.

The Emerging Threat of Online Deepfakes

Identity theft, a lucrative business for cybercriminals, has evolved into new forms - online deepfakes. These advanced creations can take the form of audio, images, or videos and could lead to new and evolving forms of identity theft. Collaboration between researchers and law enforcement agencies from at least three EU Member States or Associated countries is crucial for efficient enforcement and valid court evidence.

Technological Advancements and Societal Dimensions

The call for proposals emphasizes the importance of both technological advancements and societal dimensions. Along with protecting privacy and fundamental rights, researchers are encouraged to analyze societal trends and the modus operandi of identity thieves. Ethical considerations and regulations will be prioritized throughout the research process.

Collaboration with Civil Society Organisations and Experts

Involvement from Civil Society Organisations, sociologists, and psychologists will add valuable insights to the proposals in raising awareness and understanding the psychological impact on victims.

Invitation to Candidates from Various Sectors

Candidates from Central Government, International Organisations, Large Enterprises, and researchers, among others, are encouraged to submit their proposals. The application period starts on June 30, 2021, and ends on November 23, 2021. For more detailed information on the call, including eligibility and the submission process, please visit the European Commission’s webpage.
