Preventing Financial Crimes in Hungary: A National Strategy

In a bid to strengthen security, law and order, and reduce financial crimes, the Hungarian government has unveiled a comprehensive national crime prevention strategy. The strategy aims to mitigate the negative impact of committed offenses and provide protection for families and individuals.

Four Priority Areas of the Strategy

  • Enhancement of Urban Security: This area focuses on improving safety in urban areas through various initiatives.
  • Prevention of Juvenile Delinquency: The government aims to prevent young people from engaging in delinquent behavior through targeted programs and interventions.
  • Prevention of Victimization and Providing Support for Victims: This priority area focuses on supporting victims of crime and preventing victimization through awareness-raising initiatives and community-based programs.
  • Avoidance of Repetition of Offenses: The strategy aims to reduce the likelihood of offenders reoffending by providing support and resources for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

Systemic Crime Prevention

The strategy emphasizes the importance of developing crime prevention activities through the optimization, adjustment, and review of current procedures and internal regulations. This will help to avoid supplementary administrative burdens on institutions involved in crime prevention.

Coordinated Crime Prevention Actions

The government aims to ensure that crime prevention aspirations are taken into account in other government objectives and policies. Regulatory needs, strategies, management plans, application for grants, and funding allocation handled by different ministries and government bodies will be coordinated.

Raising Awareness of the Usefulness of Crime Prevention

The strategy highlights the need to measure social benefits of crime prevention and increase awareness among all groups within society. Crime prevention approaches should become an integral part of daily life.

Effective Intervention

Effective crime prevention measures require adequate tangible and financial resources, as well as efficient use of those resources. The strategy emphasizes the importance of planning and carrying out result-oriented interventions that are focused on sustainability.

Infringements

The government recognizes that citizens often do not differentiate between infringements and more serious offenses, which affects their sense of security. Therefore, preventing infringements will also be targeted in crime prevention activities.

Concentrated Use of Available Grants

Available resources will be used in a concentrated and programmable way to finance continuous and systemic projects, pilot schemes, and developments that establish coherence between local crime prevention activities.

Identification of Co-operators

The government acknowledges the complexity of responses to crimes and encourages the identification of those who wish to be involved in crime prevention.

Effective Communication

Raising awareness for crime prevention programs and presenting prevention techniques, as well as the results of crime prevention, are important parts of the strategy. The media will play an important role in restoring confidence and spreading law-abiding behavior.
