Namibia May Soon Require Use of IFRS Accounting Standards for Domestic Companies

The Namibian Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAN) may soon require domestic companies whose securities trade in a public market to adopt International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) accounting standards. This move could have significant benefits for Namibian businesses, including attracting foreign investors and improving the transparency and consistency of financial statements.

Current Requirements

Currently, foreign companies with publicly traded securities in Namibia are required to report under IFRS standards. However, the country’s Companies Act does not explicitly require or permit the use of IFRS for domestic companies.

IFRS Adoption

ICAN has adopted IFRS standards and the IFRS for SMEs standard, which allows entities without public accountability to choose between full IFRS standards, the IFRS for SMEs standard, or a local accounting framework. The institute recognizes that full IFRS standards can be burdensome for many private companies operating in Namibia’s small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) economy.

IFRS for SMEs Standard

In 2010, ICAN adopted the IFRS for SMEs standard, which provides a simpler and more flexible alternative to full IFRS standards. The standard is currently used by all entities without public accountability that do not represent the public interest.

Technical Committee Review

While ICAN has not made any explicit plans to require or permit the use of IFRS accounting standards for domestic companies, the institute’s Technical Committee is reviewing the option for entities without public accountability to use a local accounting framework instead of the IFRS for SMEs standard.

Benefits of Adopting IFRS

The move towards adopting IFRS accounting standards could benefit Namibian businesses by providing a uniform and globally recognized framework for financial reporting. This could attract foreign investors and improve the transparency and consistency of financial statements.

Continuing Education Workshops

ICAN has announced that it will provide annual continuing education workshops on full IFRS standards and the IFRS for SMEs standard to its members in practice and business. The workshops aim to update professionals on the latest developments in financial reporting and provide guidance on implementing IFRS standards in Namibia.

Government Response

The Namibian government has not commented on the potential adoption of IFRS accounting standards for domestic companies, but industry experts believe that such a move could be beneficial for the country’s economy.
