Indonesia Receives High Praise from APG for Efforts Against Money Laundering and Terror Financing

Kathmandu, Nepal - The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (APG) Annual Session in Kathmandu has concluded that Indonesia’s efforts to prevent and eradicate criminal acts of money laundering and financing of terrorism are considered “very adequate”.

APG Assessment

The assessment was conducted by the APG Secretariat with representatives from the United States, Canada, Macao-China, China-Taipei, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The evaluation evaluated Indonesia’s compliance with 40 recommendations related to legal framework compliance.

Results

  • Indonesia received a ‘C’ rating (compliant) for six recommendations
  • An ‘LC’ rating (Largely Compliant) for 29 recommendations
  • A ‘PC’ rating (Partially Compliant) for four recommendations
  • Only one recommendation, related to funding for the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, was rated as ‘NC’ (Non-Compliant)

Effectiveness of Implementation

  • Indonesia received a Substantial rating for five Immediate Outcomes
  • A Moderate rating for five outcomes
  • A Low rating for one outcome related to funding for the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction

Comparison with Other Countries

Indonesia’s effectiveness in implementing anti-money laundering/counter-terrorism financing (AML/CFT) measures is better compared to APG countries such as Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Preparation towards FATF Full Membership

Becoming a FATF full member will accelerate Indonesia’s recognition as a country with high financial system integrity, provide a strong footing for economic development, demonstrate leadership in Asia and emerging markets, and enable active participation in setting international AML/CFT standards.

Bank Indonesia Strategies


Bank Indonesia has prepared three strategies to support the government’s efforts:

  • Fulfilling all FATF recommendations for payment systems and foreign exchange business activities
  • Applying AML-CFT principles effectively
  • Increasing public awareness and institutional cooperation

Roadmap towards FATF Membership

Bank Indonesia’s strategies aim to support the government’s efforts to become a full member of FATF. The roadmap involves fulfilling all FATF recommendations, applying AML-CFT principles effectively, and increasing public awareness and institutional cooperation.
